Special Session: Evolutionary Optimization for Complex Engineering Challenges

Aim:
Evolutionary computation techniques have successfully been applied in the area of engineering, particularly in tackling large scale and complex optimization problems. In recent years, many research efforts have focused on solving complex engineering optimization problems. These challenges are characterized by dynamic and stochastic constraints, computational power, uncertainty, dealing with high dimensionality, problem formulation, representation, scalability, and the incorporation of multiple criteria. Complex engineering problems often require an engineering perspective to address the integration of multiple objectives and incorporate problem-specific knowledge throughout the product life cycle to compute robust solutions. For example, evolutionary computation techniques have been successfully applied in the area of mining, particularly addressing large-scale optimization problems such as cost-efficient extraction of ore, ore processing and blending problem, and large-scale open pit mine scheduling problem. Long-term planning and production scheduling are among the most critical tasks in mining. The goal is to efficiently extract valuable ore from a mineral deposit in a sequence that considers numerous mining and precedence constraints, all while maintaining economic efficiency. The main aim of this special session is to bring together researchers working on mulitdisciplinary bio-inspired computing techniques and complex engineering optimization challenges and provide a forum for them to discuss the latest outcomes and new directions for future research.
