Post-doctoral Research Fellowship now open!

Project: Enabling machines to learn and reason with knowledge
Duration: 2 years (renewable)
Salary: University Level B (AU$94,135 per year), plus benefits. Funding for relocation and conference travel is available.

The project is run by Dr Qinfeng (Javen) Shi.

Humans have accumulated a great deal of knowledge over thousands of years. Knowledge might be the long-established links between symptoms and diseases, or the accepted social rules between users, or the known relationships between the persons' functional status and their activities. This project aims to develop a mechanism for computers to understand knowledge with the ability to correct or improve knowledge by learning from large scale data, and to handle uncertainty when the provided knowledge rules disagree and/or the data are noisy and unreliable.

We expect the project will lead to publications in machine learning, natural language processing and computer vision conferences and journals. There will also be opportunities for joint supervision of PhD students, collaboration with international partners.

The successful applicant must have:
  • a PhD in a relevant discipline
  • a background in machine learning or natural language processing, preferably including Probabilistic Graphical Models and deep learning
  • experience in C++, Python and/or Matlab
  • a good publication record commensurate with experience
  • fluency in written and spoken English
  • the ability to work individually and as a member of a broader team

    Status: application open.
