ACALCI 2017 Special Session on Optimisation Algorithms and Applications

Optimisation algorithms are an intrinsic and enabling part of computational intelligence and therefore, artificial life. Many natural problems encountered in commercial and social contexts are highly complex and often have to be represented by a mix of discrete and continuous variables. Optimisation research therefore predominantly focuses on developing exact and heuristic methods that can produce solutions to such problems in a single- and multi-objective context.

Many practical problems exhibit constraints to be accommodated by the algorithm and sometimes necessitate a multi-stage optimisation process where the outcome of one optimisation phase becomes the input to another. Alternatively, researchers have applied evolutionary and other nature-inspired heuristics that can tackle large multimodal search spaces but require careful parameterisation. Highly multimodal search spaces favour the use of niching methods in such algorithms. All these aspects are of interest to this special session.

This session is aiming to bring together researchers in the optimisation area to present their work, discuss their research interests, and initiate potential collaboration projects in different optimisation aspects, including, but not limited to:

  • Search space characterisation
  • Parameterisation (parameter tuning and control)
  • Optimisation applications
  • Multi-stage optimisation
  • Niching methods
  • Constraint handling techniques
  • Continuous and discrete methods as well as a mix of them
  • Exact and heuristic algorithms

In particular, we value approaches that are effective in solving problems encountered in the business, industrial and social contexts.

Manuscripts submitted to special sessions should be done through the paper submission website of ACALCI 2017. Authors should select the topic "SPECIAL SESSION on Optimisation Algorithms and Applications" in the submission website.

All papers submitted to special sessions will be subject to the same peer-review procedure as the regular papers. Papers submitted to this special session track (if accepted and presented) will be published in the ACALCI 2017 proceedings.
